Pet Health Insurance's Health Plans

When pet owners buy a pet they shop around at the different pet shops, breeders, pet rescues, and animal shelters until they find the dog, cat, or exotic pet that suits them, what very few pet owners do is consider the veterinary cost to their new pet. The oversight can be financially devastating and heartbreaking, emotionally.

Veterinary prices are on the rise. Technology, liability insurance, drugs, and medical research have caused the cost of veterinary clinics to increase. Veterinary clinics in rural areas of the country (especially those combining small-scale animal practice with large-scale animal practice) find it difficult to attract young veterinarians who graduate from veterinary school to their clinics; they are forced to offer higher wages to compete with clinics located near major cities. The salary rise is then passed on to pet owners.

It has been estimated recently that the average dog owner spends about two hundred dollars a year at the vet's office. Cats were a little cheaper; only around a hundred and sixty dollars were spent on veterinary bills by their owners. That's a lot of money when you consider what the average life expectancy is for a pet, particularly on held inside. And what if the pet is not your dog or cat run of the mill? Even if the pet, like a pot bellied pig, a ferret, a cat, a snake or even a skunk, is anything more exotic? The more exotic the pet the more likely it is that the pet owner will spend on the veterinary bills, especially if they have a pet such as a skunk that will probably require a vet with special abilities. What happens if the pet gets sick suddenly, or is injured in a freak accident? How far would it bring the pet owner back if they have to take their family pet to the veterinary school of a university, are they able to afford it or are they forced to euthanize their pet for economic reasons?

Most pet owners seek to keep the unforeseen veterinarian bills at bay by giving their pets outstanding care. They ensure the pet is kept well groomed to prevent insects and skin disorders. They feed only their pets foods which are very carefully balanced with a good nutrient blend. They ensure the pet keeps a healthy weight, not to thin and not to fat. Some pet owners will not let their pets go out of the house, fearing a freak crash. Although pet owners should take better care of their pets and do their utmost to keep their family pet safe, even the most vigilant, health-conscious pet owner can't prevent anything.

Animal health insurance is one way of stopping crippling veterinary bills. Pet health insurance is purchase by insurance pet owners to help cover veterinary bills similar to that of human health insurance. The chances of a pet owner being willing to afford a pet health plan at the same health insurance provider where they purchase their human health insurance are slim. Most owners of pets will find they need to go to a separate insurance company specializing in pet health insurance.
