Service Dog Training

There are three types of aid dogs — the hearing dog, the guide dog and the service dog. Both have the same aims, to support people with disabilities in the everyday activities of their lives. Service dogs go further than assisting people with hearing or sight difficulties.

Depending on the special training the owner requires, they may also be qualified as seizure response dogs or mobility assistance dogs. However, dogs can only perform such services if they have received proper dog training in the service.

Training:

Training service dogs have two forms: self-training and system preparation.

Self-training is guided by the trainer himself, like other forms of dog training. Although it could be easier than hiring a skilled dog trainer, self-training might improve the owners' and dogs' relationship and interdependence.

A variety of dogs may be prepared for work on the operation. Some people have chosen to train their old pets as suitable partners , particularly for the dog has shown some tendencies to become good in medical aid. Many men, however, procure their dogs from dog breeders with the dog training in their minds for service.

In this specific reason, dog trainers may study many techniques and procedures in training a dog. Online guides and published literature exist about how to train a dog for service work. Many people also prefer to employ specialist professional organizations in this area to do the job for them.

The only downside is that because of the highly advanced methods these organisations have, the dog can learn at a quicker speed. Training stops, however, when the dogs are sent to their owners unless the dog owners are knowledgeable about this type of training. Training never ceases for owner-trained dogs however.

Nonetheless, if the owner buys a dog from a breeder with the intention of making a service dog out of it, the breeder will give the simple commands such as sit, come, stay with no previous training. The owner will then fill in the newer commands he needs, such as opening the door or turning the lights off.

At the other side, specially bred and based program-trained dogs are for service activities. These dogs are usually trained for more than a year to get acclimatized to special circumstances and people they are trained to respond to.

There are a number of ways to administer the training. Training could be administered through selected prisoners in the United States. This process has been shown to be of great benefit as inmates could promote proper training while improving their process socialization skills.

The applicant must undergo an application and assessment process in order to avail of a support dog. After that, the prospective owner would have to be placed on the waiting list when training a dog fit for the relevant services. These dogs may be offered free of charge while other organisations would ask the owner to pay such fees with or without financial assistance.

Once the owner gets his dog, he has sometime to work with the dog to get him used to the way the new handler handles the training. This could take up to months for certain weeks. To refresh the training, the dog has to be sent off to the training organisation.

Support dog preparation not only creates dogs but can be a considerable benefit to people with disabilities. They are also healthy friends and emotional supports.
