Ringworm is a very common form of skin disease, found in dogs and cats alike. Although its name makes you think otherwise, no worm of any kind causes this skin disease. It is actually caused by the fungi known as dermatophytes which feed on dead tissues found in the skin surface, spreading them around the animal's skin.
With cats, there is a certain form of fungus known as M Canis which is associated in almost 95 percent of all cases of ringworms. Cats will usually get ringworm disease from infected items such as bedding, clippers or other animals that already have the disease. If there are animals that have the ringworm disease in your home or around your house, your cat could acquire it this way very easily.
When you have kittens or cats in your home that are less than a year old, you should always take care, as they are more vulnerable to ringworm. Kittens can contract the disease with ease, particularly if you allow them to go outside. They can easily come into contact with an object contaminated with the disease, or with another cat. Kittens take a long time to build up their immune system, and meanwhile they are more likely to get common disease like ringworm.
The most common ringworm signs in cats are raw or torn fur, or hair loss around the head or paws. A patch of scaly skin on the body that appears itchy and inflamed, can quickly recognize the ringworm. There will be split hairs across the scaly skin layer, too. It is a very sensitive place and you should never try to touch it because it hurts your pet.
When you experience any of the above signs with your cat, you can arrange a rendezvous with your vet immediately. When your cat is being treated with ringworm by the vet, he may prescribe ointment or tablets. Though, what he says will decide how bad the ringworm is. When he prescribes pills to your pet, they should be provided with meals. At the other side, ointment is usually applied, topically, onto the skin. So ensure your cat recovers, you can just use what your vet prescribes on a regular basis. The process of healing will take some time, usually around six weeks or more.
Cats with ringworm should be classified as being contagious. If you've kids in the house, keep them away from your pet. You should also use gloves while you're holding your cat. The ringworms are contagious, and caution should always be used. Although it is a mild disease, due to the slow recovery time and the fact that it is contagious, ringworm can lead to serious problems.
