If a dog owner wants to train his dog he should set his mind in the right frame. This will keep him from breaking any dog rules, an act that could really harm the learning interest of the dog.
The owner will also be prevented from doing the things that could harm his relationship with the dog, following the training rules. There are other guidelines that must be followed in the preparation, including:
Stay Focused:
Failure to complete a mission usually leads to frustration. Make sure that each time you give the dog a order, you both will follow through with it. Refrain from distracting yourself each time you give a command.
Say you ask your dog to lie down. If you send this order make sure you both see the end of it. Do not pull your dog's leash and stop halfway, and confuse yourself. First, always complete one order then move on to the next.
The dog can sit and not just bend its rear legs fully. If you don't make this happen, the dog will think it's okay for him not to complete the task or neglect it completely next time you give the order. Always stay concentrated, this will minimize ambiguity and optimize obedience to a order.
Punishments and Rewards:
Many owners are eager to let their dogs hear a series of praises or be rewarded with several treats instead of one every time a order is followed. On the other hand, many owners give too many punishments on a single wrong thing that the dog did, rather than just punishing him once. Both may have negative effects on the dog's training.
Never over do the dog's actions rewarding or punishing. If you use love as a reward, don't praise the dog over it. Single "good boy" praise will do to acknowledge that you are for what the dog has done. This should be said right after the order is executed.
Similarly, if the dog fails to obey your instructions, a single pulling of the test cord would suffice. That would send him the signal that there is something wrong.
It will stop him from learning to overdosage the dog with either rewards or punishments. He would remember only the praises or the punishments and not what he or she did or did not.
Positive Praise in End:
Make it a point for each training session that the workout will end with a positive praise. This will make the dog look forward to the next training, because the last session fulfilled their need to please you. Also, make sure the last command was properly executed so that the dog is properly oriented to the following commands.
Keep Patience:
The dog often gets impatient when trainers don't get the results they want. Then they are doing something very stupid which would ruin the preparation.
Working out will be a fun experience for you and your dog. If it starts to make you lose your patience and a lot more disobedient to your dog, then you can try to determine the pitfalls.
