Pet health insurance companies are hoping to be able to catch up with European pet owners in the United States someday. A recent survey of American pet owners suggested that about three percent of American pet owners had bought pet health insurance for their pet family. The findings have shocked a veterinarian who was interviewed after the study. She thought the survey to have been generous. She believes less than one per cent of her patients have any insurance for health care.
About 25 per cent of all pet owners in Europe have some kind of pet health insurance on their pets. In Sweden, the numbers are even higher where about fifty per cent of all pet owners rely on pet health insurance to help pay the medical expenses of their pet.
Some experts believe the reason so many UK pet owners have pet health insurance is because of an act passed in 1971. In the UK dog owners are liable for any accident for which they find their pet to be responsible. This means that if a dog darts out into traffic and causes a pile of seven cars the owner of the dog is responsible for paying all the damage. Unwilling to dip into their own pickets to cover the misadventures of their pet pet owners in the UK buying something called third party insurance. Third party insurance is a purely liability insurance targeted specifically at pet owners.
Many American pet owners don't realize similar pet liability insurance plans are available in the US. Pet owners who wish to purchase pet liability insurance to cover any damage their pets might be liable instead should be aware that certain dog breeds are listed as high risk insurance cases and the owners will be required to pay extra high insurance policies.
It's unclear why more US pet owners don't buy pet health insurance. One possibility is that pet owners simply don't exactly understand how expensive pet health care is. Sometimes fifteen minutes spent at a veterinarian 's office can cost as much as one hundred dollars. When a pet owner faces the cost of an emergency surgery or needs to take their family pet to a veterinary veterinarian to treat an infection, they immediately find themselves wishing they had insurance to help offset the large vet bill. All too often pet owners who are in an emergency situation are forced, for economic reasons, to euthanize their beloved pet.
Pet owners who are urban dwellers probably feel they need not worry about something like pet health insurance because they may not be able to see when they need it. Their pets are living inside, and what might happen to them. What these pet owners do not realize is that illness can sometimes have the hardest effect on household pets because their immune systems have had no chance of building up any resistance.
Farmers and ranchers have a very clear idea of how quickly and accidentally, and how expensive veterinary care is. Most of them want to insure their pets' health but there's simply not enough extra money to afford the monthly premiums. Also, ranchers and farmers tend to have a working knowledge of diseases and injuries which allows them to treat their own pets.
